Wildflowers Of June 2019

June is usually a month dominated by Catawba Rhododendrons. However, this year on Roan Mountain and surrounding areas they were early and I was late. This error in timing allowed for another more rare wildflower to take center stage...the Gray's Lily (Cover Photo).
Like I said on my blog about going to the Roans this was only the second time seeing these. I will have more pictures of these on a special blog which will also cover four other favorites, Pink Lady Slippers, the afford mentioned Rhododendrons, Flame Azaleas (which I did see a few stragglers) and to my amazement late season Mountain Laurel (Bottom Photo) at Mount Mitchell State Park.
There were some new ones and others I had never seen, plus there were some returning favorites. Overall June turned out to be a good month to start the Summer of Wildflowers...

  1. In the St. Clair section, the picture marked "Still unknown" is the fruit of Carolina cranesbill.
