Day Of Old School Grillin'

Today was cook-out day in Greeneville, but things didn't go as planned. The gas grill at Deb's Mom's malfunctioned  (it might need new burners), so I had to go old school. We had to get out the old charcoal grill. It has been 10 years or more since I used a charcoal grill, let's just say I was a little rusty. While only half the gas grill was working it did allow me to get the pork ribs started and while they slow cooked I went and got charcoal. Once I got back and got the grill lit I threw  on some wood chips and smoked the ribs a while. Then I later cooked the chicken on it too. I will say these might have been the best ribs I have made. While challenging it was fun. We also had plenty other good things like potato salad and baked beans it was a excellent cook-out.

Since I Was In Erwin It Was Hawg -N- Dawg Time

I love barbecue and I have been to some great places in East Tennessee, like Dixie BBQ and Ridgewood BBQ, but I heard the best might be in of all places Erwin. The name of this place...the Hawg -N- Dawg. So, when I knew I would be hiking the AT near Erwin I knew this was my opportunity to go to the Hawg -N- Dawg. It is located in downtown and as the name suggests it serves hot dogs, but I was there for barbecue. I got the large BBQ pork sandwich and baked beans. While the beans were good the star, as it should be, was the barbecue. It was as good a barbecue sandwich as I have had. They also had a number different sauces, 13 in fact, all but one made in-house. I tried four; Carolina, Mild, Sweet Heat and Smoky Mesquite. My favorite were the Sweet Mild and the Carolina. Besides the barbecue another barometer of how good a place is, the sweet tea. Hawg -N- Dawg had that covered too. After some great barbecue it was time for desert. I had the Ooey-gooe Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream which is made fresh. I just have to say a lot of restaurants don't live up to the hype but this one does. If you ever needed a reason to go to Erwin, you have one now.

New Friends & The Beauty Spot To Boot Just Another Day On The AT

After the events that transpired on my hike in the Smokies, Saturday, to Mount LeConte I was hesitant to do another group hike. However, I do remember I did have some great experiences with my Thursday Hike Georgia group, so with that in mind I met the some of the members of the Greeneville Hiking Club at Indian Grave Gap above Erwin, TN. I will say I am glad I did, the whole group was excellent hiking partners. They just weren't out to beat at miles, so their pace was more to my liking and they just enjoyed being out on the trail. When we arrived there was a gentlemen who was doing "Trail Magic," giving out drinks and snacks to SOBOs. Anyway, our hike today was north on the Appalachian Trail (AT), which crosses at Indian Grave Gap. We hiked about 2.5 miles out to the Beauty Spot, a grassy bald with nice views. This was my second time doing this hike (the first was back in October of 2013). The AT is mostly uphill, but not near the steep grade as LeConte. When we arrived at the Beauty Spot some who had never been there had noticed the road we had crossed earlier and now the parking area near the top. Yes, you can drive up there I told them I use to come up too the Beauty Spot in my old college days. After we enjoyed the view it was downhill back to the trailhead at Indian Grave Gap. Overall it was a nice hike with some cool people and I even got to see some early fall colors. Since I was near Erwin I first went to eat at the Hawg n' Dawg (check the next entry) and then drove out to Uncle Johnny's Nolichucky Hostel & Outfitters. As the name says it is on the river and the AT goes right by which is cool. Oh, I am ending the day with a fire...nice!

The Penultimate Beard Blog: Week 51 - Day 359

Well as the title says this is the Beard Blog before the one year anniversary of starting to grow my beard and the blog entries that goes a long with it. So, I am going to save all the one year old stuff until next week. However, this week I first must correct an error on the Beard Blog...how many days I have been growing my beard. The date I had for the blog last week was 334 that would mean today would be day 341. Well, I messed up somewhere because today is actually day 359 of the blog (meaning last week should have been 352). Somewhere I miss placed 18 days! Anyway, I am not going back to correct the past blogs, but 359 is the correct date. This past week I got out to the Smokies and finally got to hike Mt. LeConte it was well worth the wait. So, it is 51 weeks down and one more to go to complete one year

Day 356 (yes it is) from Cliff Tops...

...Myrtle Point...

...& High Top on Mt. LeConte.

Day 359 (not 341).
