There are not many places I love more than the Roans. But this fantastic place is not just one mountain, but eight separate peaks (with a couple of minor ones) with the Appalachian Trail (AT) traversing six. So, because of this, I am going to divide the Roans into three blogs. This first one will comprise the peaks of the middle section of the Roans between Carvers and Yellow Gaps. The reason this is called the Highlands is that these are the famous natural balds that reminded the first Europeans of the Highlands of Scotland. The peaks that make up the Roan Highlands are Round, Jane, and Grassy Ridge Balds plus there are also one I named, Harriet Bald and Big Roan Ridge.
On Round Bald, you can find Dr, Brown's tress, which were planted in the 1930s. Jane Bald is named in honor of Jane Cook. The reason I call the next Harriet Bald is that she was Jane's sister and died tragically near here. Finally, Grassy Ridge Bald which is the last 6,000-foot peak the AT passes until the White Mountains. There is also a subpeak called Big Roan Ridge. I will also include my favorite gap, Carvers. This is by far and away from the most popular section of the Roans. Anyway, here is part two, the Roan Highlands From....
