Old Business & New From Newfound Gap To The Chimneys

Finishing up some October business, I recently returned to the Smokies for a hike with multiple objectives and keeping with that so will this blog. I will give some description of the hike and also use it to so case pictures. Anyway, those objectives for this hike were in three parts, the first was completing the Appalachian Trail (AT) that we abandoned because it was raining and we miss read a sign, back in September. We also missed the Hiker Tunnel, so that was also included in this first part of the hike. I did learn something we might not have miss read the sign back in September as the AT part of the sign at Indian Gap was missing and it turns out it was also gone when we were there, but we didn't notice.

How it is suppose to look...

...September...

...thanks vandels!

That hike was with people from my Sierra Club hiking group. Today's hike was also with fellow members of the Harvey Broome Group and after finding that first part we moved on to the second by completing the Road Prong Trail, which Margaret needed to do (so did everyone else in the group). One thing about the Road Prong Trail, you can tell from the lack of trail maintenance it is not one of the most traveled trails in the park. It is rugged in a number of spots.

Here the trail was rerouted.

This creek is the trail.

Talking Falls...

...Triking Falls...

...Road Prong Falls.

That gets us to the third part as the Road Prong connects with the Chimney Topes Trail and my friend, Hike Leader, Denise (OK, I was technically Hike Leader today) had tried on two previous attempts to make it up the first Chimney Top. But on this day she faced her fears and climbed right up that first Chimney. Oh, there was no trip to the second Chimney Top today (or anytime in the future). So, with that said enjoy the photos (I will have descriptions when warranted).

Start of the Stairway to Heaven.
