AT Day Hiking @ Blood Mountain

Today was Deb's return to Blood Mountain, oh it was also my fifth. Anyway we did the Blood Mountain Loop today. This hike starts at the Byron Reese Memorial and takes the trail of the same name 0.7 miles to Flatrock Rock Gap. Before we headed up the switchbacks we checked out the small Byron Reese Falls. At Flatrock Gap we took the Freeman Trail around the mountain to Bird Gap. We then took the AT north to the summit of Blood Mountain. Let me say it was crowded today. The area around the shelter and Picnic Rock was full of thru & day hikers. Oh and the privy was not in the best shape. It had two dead mice in a bucket. So, we hiked down to the large outcrop that is either first or last depending whether you are going north or south. This spot has the best view on Blood Mountain and we ate lunch here. We then hiked down the steep south face of the mountain. After making it back to Flatrock Gap we finished the loop at the Byron Reese Memorial. In the end it was about six miles and Deb survived. We finished the day at Sunrise Grocery and Mountain Crossing. I will have a more extensive photo blog later.
