Summer Is Almost Here On Memorial Day Weekend in SW Virginia

So, the weather finally cleared...a bit which means it was time to head to the Cabin in Fort Blackmore. The main thing on the agenda (as always) was mowing and weed eating.  I finished the mowing part on Saturday and as reported by Pete we went hiking Sunday morning up to Wood Booger Ridge. It was a good hike.

Early Memorial Day morning as Pete and I headed out Dad got a call. The reason I mentioned this as it will come in to play later. So, we headed up to Russell and then Robert Knob. It was when I stopped here so Pete could go "Down the Rabbit Hole" I heard the tractor start so I  figured it had something to do with the phone call. Dad was gone by the time I got back. So, I took off my old wet boots and got things ready.

About an hour or so later Dad came back and one of our neighbors had gotten their truck stuck on the road that goes left at the creek bridge. Dad took the tractor to help get it out, but couldn't get to it. So he needed to come back from the other side to pull it out. That means going up, then down past the second barn though the neighbor (who was stuck) down the road to the truck. So, he needed my help, but I was going even if he didn't ask. Anyway, I put my cordless electric chainsaw on the tractor bush hog, put on my extremely wet boots, and followed him over (you knew I would like it). I knew past the first gate heading down towards the second barn there was a tree that needed cut out of the road/trail. However, since I  was down there earlier in the month there were two more fallen trees to cut out.

What was cool was I never been down this road before. Funny thing it is even rougher than the one to the Cabin. One cool thing was an old Cabin, that had collapsed. But we got the truck out and then we headed the rest of the way down the road then back to the Cabin. I will have to add this to my hikes.

Before I go I just have to say something about those 20 "hikers" who had to be rescued at Devil's Bathtub just up the road from where I was at. Oh, and no I wasn't one of the 20, Pete would never ask to be rescued. I didn't hear about the hikers until I got home, but it rained pretty hard Sunday so I am not surprised this happened. If you want to reduce the risk of needing to be rescued and not have a great spot, like Devil's Bathtub, closed. One, read the weather report. Two, be prepared like dry clothes or warm clothes. Three, don't camp in a flood plain and finally (this may be the toughest) don't be stupid!

Well, that was my weekend in Southwest Virginia...it went better than some.
