Today's Hike Georgia outing was the fourth attempt at this particular hike from the Brasstown Bald Parking Area. The previous three attempts had been moved or canceled, because of weather. That might account for the low turnout or it being a Wednesday. Anyway it was mid-week regulars Beth (who joined me last week on the back-up hike) and Kelly. Everyone else missed out because it was perfect weather and a nice day. The hike was supposed to be a 7.4 mile out and back to Locust Log Ridge on the Arkaquah Trail. But, since we passed the vista there it turned out to be about eight miles. There was some nice views at Locust Log Ridge. Because of this and the trail being more uphill than I had read it took us a little longer to complete the hike. It also didn't help that the wildflowers were so awesome! There were old favorites like Mountain Laurel and Flaming Azaleas. Then the seasons first Catawba Rhododendrons and a sweet bonus of Pink Lady Slippers (see future blog for photos of these). Once we got back to the lot Kelly decided to stay at her truck while Beth and I hiked the six-tenths of a mile to the summit of Brasstown Bald. The vista was excellent for a day in May, because Sawnee Mountain and Clingmans Dome were visible 47 and 50 miles respectively. Beth left before I did so I stayed on top a little longer at the summit before heading back. However, I had one more stop at Track Rock Gap. If we had done the entire Arkaquah Trail it runs out at Track Rock Gap. Since we didn't do the extra three miles I still wanted to see the petroglyphs here. So, I drove to the small parking area and hiked to the sight and it was pretty cool. Nice end to a long day.
