While It Is Still Spring, Summer Is Around The Corner Even On Blood Mountain

Spring, it is Deb's favorite time to hike. While she doesn't mind the autumn, winter is too cold and summer is hot and what she calls "boogery" which means poison oak and snakes. With that said we decided to head to Blood Mountain for one last big hike for her this spring. Funny thing is it felt like fall but the trail looked like summer (which she wasn't happy with a times). Anyway, I have blogged about Blood Mountain extensively (see the links at the end of the blog), so this will be a photo blog. I think this summer I will do a compare and contrast about the seasons on this wonderful mountain. However for now here are photos from our hike Sunday.

Quick stop at Neel Gap...

...before heading to the Byron Reese...

...when we arrived at 9:30am people were parked everywhere...

...as you can see it was pretty full.

I did get to see some Mountain Laurel...

...before...

...entering the Blood Mountain Wilderness...

...Deb's seventh time (my 18th).

Steps on the Byron Reese Trail.

Deb headed up...

...this spot...

...she made it.

That big Rosbay Rhododendron tree.

When we got to Flatrock Gap there was...

...a new Byron Reese Trail sign...

...& a Freeman Trail one too.

Headed on the Freeman.

Bumble Bee & Blackberry Bloom.

This "glitchy" Bumble Bee could be proof we live in the "Matrix."

Trail was a see of green...

...& rocks...

...Deb didn't like either.

Virginia Spiderwort.

Cliff Saxifrage

Bluets.

Yellow Flaming Azaleas.

Deb has learned to like...

...Mountain Laurel...

...it is my favorite.

The Freeman Trail...

...Deb was relived when we were off of it...

...at Bird Gap.

Deb says "testify!"

Now we head up...

...the AT.

Headed up from Slaughter Creek junction.

On the west side of Blood was orange...

...& red Flaming Azaleas.

The green AT.

The iconic white blaze.

As we neared the top we ran into blooming...

...Catawba Rhododendrons...

...nice!

That cool white blaze tree means...

...you are at the summit.

Vista from Picnic Rock...

...& me...

...plus the vista right over from Picnic Rock.

View above the CCC Shelter.

North vista of the valley around...

...Brasstown Bald.

At the shelter...

...in the afternoon...

...as the sun was brightly gleaming.

Headed across the summit area...

...& the summit marker.

This dog's name is Smokiy & she from TN.

Here is some Blood Mountain Laurel.

The beauty of Blood Mountain.

Just so many beautiful views on this mountain.

Black & Big Cedar Mountains.

Panorama on Big Rock Outcrop (Vista #5).

Wood Booger...

...& Deb at the Big Rock Vista.

Vista & blooming Blood Mountain Laurel...

...more of the laurel up close.

On the summit there was plenty Catawba Rhododendrons...

...provided a back drop for us...

...& Deb.

Call the Finding Bigfoot team...a Wood Booger sighted on Blood Mtn.

Catawba Rhododendrons were amazing...

...& so was the Blood Mountain Laurel...

...it might be my favorite.

Deb enjoying the vista.

Vista & white blaze.

Panorama at the Big Outcrop (Vista #7).

I love it here!

This shows how steep Blood Mountain is.

Headed down.

More rhododendron & laurel.

I love this spot, it was amazing all-green.

The vista below the summit area...

...here I spotted Beartongue...

...Ragwort.

Back on the trail.

Rattlesnake Weed.

I am glad this is blazed well now.

Deb headed down.

Big Rock kissing a tree.

Back at Flatrock Gap (where we met that lost group).

After helping some lost hikers it is back down the Byron Reese.

Deb headed...

...down the home-stretch.

This stream means we just have a short walk to the trailhead.

On the way back we stopped at Mountain Crossing...

...here is the view from the store...

...& the overlook.

This beautiful Mountain Laurel tree is in front of the store...

...nice!
