While not being the longest (coming in at three miles) it is steep in places and the trail is rocky. Margarette Falls has been featured three times for the Annual Halloween Week Hike (2015, 2016 & 2017), but the first time for Thanksgiving. Because of the lateness of Turkey Day, this was also the last hike of Autumn.
I was last here with the Sierra Club back in September. At that time it was still green and hot, which meant low water flow. None of these were true in late Fall. The leaves were gone, it was in the 40s (which felt great) and lots of water flow. Unlike back in September I thought it was best not to lead my small group up to Bailey Falls. I have read that in a high flow that you will have to wade to get to it. Doing it at low water levels, I believe that description and plus that water was cold. However, the natural amphitheater that is Margarette Falls was beautiful!
Something else that was new was the blazing has changed. It went from a blue rectangle blaze to a blue diamond one. This is good because the Phillips Hollow Trail is also a blue rectangle. On the way back there was this creepy doll someone left...it was missing its face. Well, it was a successful Thanksgiving Weekend Hike!
